Sclerotherapy

What is Sclerotherapy

This is a procedure where a sclerosant is injected into a vein to close and gradually eliminate it. It is commonly used to treat spider veins and small varicosities. This is an office-based procedure and can be repeated every few weeks if large areas have to be covered.

Post Procedure Instructions for Sclerotherapy

  • You will leave the clinic with legs wrapped in compression bandages or wraps, which should remain in place for 24 hours. After 24 hours you may remove them and bathe or shower. Afterward, wear compression stockings daily for at least 1 week.
  • You may notice mild bruising, discoloration, or darkening at the injection site for several days. This should gradually improve and typically returns to normal appearance within 4-6 months. Contact the office if you notice any excessive redness, drainage, skin ulceration, or “knotting” at any injection site.
  • You may experience some mild tenderness at the injection site. If needed, Aspercreme or a similar topical anti-inflammatory can help reduce local inflammation at the site.
  • You should remain active after the procedure. Walk at least 20 minutes immediately following treatment and continue walking daily.
  • Avoid running, jogging, or high impact aerobics, prolonged standing, or prolonged sitting for 1-2 weeks following treatment.
  • If you have any questions or develop any problems or complications, please contact the office at 601-939-4230.
